Single-page merchandising tool that cut product data entry time for the merchandising team.

Web

Case study

Walmart dominates physical retail but competes against eCommerce players like Amazon and Alibaba that carry tens of millions more products with far less overhead. To close that gap, Walmart eCommerce set an ambitious goal: sell every product from every brand on Walmart.com. The obstacle was data — manufacturers store product information in hundreds of different formats, and standardizing it for the catalog was slow, manual work. Walmart's internal team lacked the design capability and development bandwidth to fix it, and after evaluating several vendors chose CognitiveClouds for our experience building modern web applications with AngularJS 2.0. We designed the end-to-end experience with Walmart's merchandising stakeholders and built a single-page application to accelerate the work. Over the six-month project the results were concrete: data-entry workers went from editing a product in 36 minutes on average to just 17 — a reduction of more than 52%. With the same budget, Walmart's team of 300+ data-entry workers can now edit more than twice as many products in the same amount of time.

How we'd build this today

Technical

Cortex builds a structured map of Walmart's undocumented, inconsistent APIs up front — turning weeks of "which API do we trust" into a documented blueprint.

Business

API mapping was the biggest delay source; doing it up front means the same result, faster, with fewer mid-build surprises.

This project predates Cortex — this is how we'd approach the same problem with it today.
